2014 Week 26 Day 1 – Today I had a biopsy, to check out a patch on my back which I and the doctors thought was eczema over 4 years ago, but finally has been recognised as a basel cell carcinoma patch. Basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is a cancer of the basal cells at the bottom of the epidermis. Luckily for me, this is easily treatable and slow growing and non life threatening, nor life shortening. So, although it is not nice hearing the words cancer, it seems likely that this naughty area will be treated and go away. Of course, it has got me much more wary and alert about uv exposure and sunshine!! I thought I was quite careful, but I have quite fair skin and in the past have burnt. Often as a child or teenager. In fact, when younger it was common to come back from a holiday with flaking skin and my sisters and I would peel each others backs!! So, maybe this does not seem so surprising now. But we didn’t really know any different back then. But now, my new best friend is this: So, i urge you to check yourself. For your information, mine is an unusual presentation of something quite common. So I thought it useful to post a picture of my patch.
really good of you to spread the word like this – and to let us see what to look out for. Good luck with the treatment x
Thanks. Yes hope it is sorted soon, but I think it may be sore for a while.
Cancer is a scary word. I’m glad to hear that yours is not as scary as many others, and that it’s easy treatable. All the best! 🙂
Thank you for your kind words. x
